Abstract

The family Elmidae Curtis, 1830, is one of most diverse families of aquatic beetles in the world, with nearly 1500 species in 147 genera and cosmopolitan distribution. The family has both larvae and adult aquatics, and the greatest diversity occurs in streams from mountains of tropical and subtropical regions. The Elminae subfamily has the greatest richness of genera, including Hexacylloepus Hinton, 1940. The genus was described based mainly on internal anatomy and included species originally described in Cylloepus Erichson, 1847. Some of the morphological characteristics of Hexacylloepus are 1) elongated body; 2) pronotum with a longitudinal carenae on each side; 3) with a longitudinal impression into the disc; 4) the primary morphological characteristic of the group is the belt of tomentum into the himpomerum. Hexacylloepus has 25 species and two subspecies and your distribution is mostly in the Neotropical region until the South of United States of America. Unfortunately, the group was forgotten for many years and since the 70s, any species of the genus has been described. For this reason, the taxonomy of this group is outdated and there are no identification keys for species of the genus. This project has the general objective to do the review Hexacylloepus and to generate a dichotomous key to identify the species. In, 18 species and two subspecies are deposited in the Natural History Museum of London - NHM. Given the above, the purpose of this Bolsa de Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior - BEPE it is essential to visit the collection and studying the holotypes (emphasis on Hinton's collections) for to redescription of poorly known species and to describe possible new species.
