Abstract

The effectiveness of some phosphate rocks in supplying P to plants has been as high as that of more water-soluble P sources, such as the superphosphates. The effectiveness of this natural material as a source of P has been treated as agronomic effectiveness, because it is related not only to variables of the phosphate rock, but also to those of the soil-plant system where the material is being employed. Different plant species show different abilities in the acquisition of P from phosphate rocks. Changes caused or induced by plant roots in characteristics and in physical-chemical processes of the rhizosphere can play a fundamental role in the increase of solubility and availability of P in the rhizosphere. The product of this increased solubilisation may be absorbed by the root that caused this change or by a root that is near the place of solubilisation. The objective of this research project is to study the acquisition of P from natural materials promoted by different plant species when grown next to each other. Experiments will be done initially to determine the potential of P acquisition from a natural material of four distinct plant species. Subsequently, experiments will be done to verify the existence of eventual benefits promoted by species that can solubilise phosphates to those species that cannot solubilise phosphates in systems with the presence of plants of both species. These plants will be grown in tubes of PVC, filled with soil and with defined amounts of a natural source of P. It is expected that the results of this research will contribute to increase the knowledge on the phenomenon of P acquisition by plants grown in mono and multi specific cultures. (AU)
