Abstract

The importance of this work is related to the fact that the anesthetic-surgical procedures in geriatric patients are increasing over the years due to increased overall survival, and also due to technological innovation and greater diffusion of medical knowledge about how to handle this type of patient, who has peculiar characteristics. Thus, this original research in geriatric patients can serve as a warning to the scientific community and public health managers about the need to discuss the safety aspects in anesthesia and surgical procedures. In these patients, it seems to be associated with increased perioperative cardiac arrest (CA) incidence. The aim of this study is to evaluate the perioperative and anesthesia-related CA incidence in geriatric patients over time. The following databases will be searched: MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS and SCIELO. Meta-regression analysis will be performed with the following inclusion criteria: cohort or cross-sectional studies to report geriatric patients undergoing any surgical procedure involving the anesthesia in a hospital setting; perioperative and anestesia-related CA up to seven days after surgery; and articles without language restriction and year of publication.
