Abstract

Stomach cancer and esophageal cancer are respectively 6th and 10th in the ranking of world incidence of cancers among men and women according to the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) 2012. Frequently the treatment is surgical, so the patients undergo esophagectomy and total gastrectomy. After the surgery, there is a postoperative patient recovery. In this recovery, a conventional post-surgical protocol consisting of a prolonged fasting regimen is applied. The aim of this study is to compare the recovery of patients that have undergone the conventional protocol and patients that have undergone the ERAS Protocol (enhanced recovery after surgery), in order to assess the quality of their recovery nutritionally and their quality of life. The ERAS protocol consists of a set of multimodal measures, involving mobilization and early feeding of patients, as well as the abbreviation of preoperative fasting and hospitalization time, optimizing the turnover of beds of the Hospital de Câncer de Barretos and the quality of recovery of the patient. The study is randomized with a sample size of 192 patients. There will be a collection of nutritional, anthropometric and laboratory data of patients in order to perform the statistical analysis of the results. Then, it will be possible to compare the benefits of ERAS Protocol in relation to the conventional Protocol. (AU)
