Abstract

The major motivation behind this project is the concern for the integration of Syrians in São Paulo. The main aim is to study the integration of these refugees and their determinants. Therefore, to achieve this goal, the Syrian conflict and its spillover in Europe, as well as the refugee policies in Brazil, the cultural background of these refugees and their acceptance or rejection by the local population are to be analyzed. In addition, the role some institutions (like the government, UNHCR, the Syrian-Lebanese community, religious institutions and NGO's) play in their integration in São Paulo is also to be studied. Both quantitative and qualitative methods will be combined for this research. Statistics will be relevant for providing a profile of these refugees in São Paulo. On the other hand, qualitative methods consist in carrying out interviews and questionnaires with refugees. Qualitative methods will provide information about several issues concerning their everyday life, specially their adaptation to the country, but also major aspects like housing and working conditions, leisure time, access to social policies and public services, sociability and the production of the otherness. The interviews and questionnaires will also be addressed to professionals who work for the Syrians, with the Syrian-Lebanese community members and academic experts in this subject. These will be complementary information for studying their adaptation to the country.
