Abstract

The recent introduction of the Perturbational Complexity Index, a novel measure of brain complexity, made possible to estimate, in an objetive and non-invasive manner, the capacity of the brain to process information by integrating different cortical nuclei. Despite the great potential of the index in evaluating physiological, pharmacological and pathological alterations in patterns of effective connectivity in the thalamocortical system, the measure hasn't yet been adequately standardized in all its technical aspects. The scholarship student of this project, to be undertaken in the recently approved ICT/UNIFESP Master's program in Biomedical Engineering, will have the task to evaluate the relationships between PCI and the components of its methodology, which includes the spatial-temporal resolution and frequency content of the TMS/hd-EEG signal, as well as the complexity metric used in the calculation of the index. Different versions of the index will be applied over real and simulated TMS/hd-EEG and a standardized version of the index will be proposed and tested in different conditions of altered thalamocortical effective connectivity caused by brain lesions.
