Abstract

In this project the development of a simple methodology will be proposed in order to exfoliate and functionalize, in a single-step, a colloidal dispersion of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in a polybutadiene (PB) solution through sonication process. The advantage of such process dwells in colloidal stabilization of MoS2 in a non-polar solvent due to chemical bonds between À-electrons of carbon atoms of polybutadiene and sulfur atoms located on the edge of MoS2 slabs. After that, it will be analyzed and discussed the properties of this nanocomposite under two prospects: the first one is MoS2 acting like reinforcement in PB vulcanized elastomer improving its thermal and mechanical resistance and solvent attack resistance. The second one is to obtain a molecular nanocomposite, that is, the PB acting like a building block in a layer-by-layer assembling, having a high mechanical resistance (strenght-to-weight ratio) and a high toughness compared to metals and conventional ceramics.
