Abstract

The objective of this research project is to incorporate road capacity data into spatial models aiming at the definition of Functional Urban Regions (FURs). Specifically, we intend to detail a set of models based on the combination of population and transport infrastructure supply indicators, in which some qualitative data concerning the highways were not considered. These qualitative data refer to the number of roadway lanes, which provide a measure of road capacity by means of an indicator. To this end, geoprocessing resources and geographic information systems (GIS), along with spatial analysis techniques, such as spatial statistics and spatial modeling, will be used. This research intends to obtain models that represent more accurately the reality of the road infrastructure supply when analyzing the issue of the definition of FURs. (AU)
