Abstract

Pediatric patients who undergo cancer treatment may present with multiple symptoms, which might not be identified early. In order to perform a symptom screening evaluation in clinical practice, an instrument of objective measurement is necessary, and the Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (SSPedi) scale is a pediatric self-report symptom screening tool. It assesses 15 items of Likert-type answers ranging from 1 ( not upset at all) to 5 ( extremely upset). Objective: To validate of Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (SSPedi ) to use in the Brazilian pediatric oncologic population. Materials and methods: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional, methodological (validation of assessment instrument) and technological study. Validation process will be done by means of reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) and validity (convergent and contrasting groups) measurements. For convergent validation, Pearson coefficient will be used, with correlation coefficient higher than 0.4; and, for contrasting groups, validity will be measured using non matching t-test. The minimum sample size estimated for this phase is 264 participants (patients and caregivers). Expected results: It is hoped that this research will have an objective tool for evaluation of multiple symptoms in pediatrics and that may be useful for the application in clinical practice.
