Abstract

The main goal of this project is to study electro-optic modulators based on multi-layer interference filters. To this end, home-made computational routines will be developed in order to model the electromagnetic wave propagation in these devices. The routines will be used to propose an actual modulator using one of the existing techniques for modulating the refractive index of optical materials. The computational routines will be developed using Matlab. The project will involve steps regarding the study of the current State of the Art with respect to electro-optic modulation and integrated Photonics, as well as the study of techniques for modulating the refractive index, in a way that allows one to chose the most adequate for the given purpose. This last step will encompass the choice of the most adequate material. Finally, a viable design geometry, which is viable in terms of micro-fabrication with current state of the art microelectronics techniques, shall be proposed.
