Abstract

Attention is a fundamental process to optimize the computational capacity of a biological system. Knowing when and where something will happen facilitates the stimuli processing. In some situations, however, predictive mechanisms can also be used to inhibit responses, such as the attempting to ignore certain sound or visual stimulation. In both cases, we use anticipatory information, but with different purposes. While attentional processes have been extensively studied in recent years, expectation effects to inhibit processing are not well known. One alternative to study the processes separately is by using tasks where the expected stimuli do not require a behavioral response, that is, do not require attention. However, this protocol strategy complicates the inference about how the stimulus is being processed. Recently, studies have been developing new brain state decoding methods using EEG/MEG responses. Under these circumstances, we aim to use such methods to investigate the effects of attention and expectation on sensory processing. (AU)
