Abstract

This project analyzes the urban transformations in Lima, capital of Peru, which aimed to mobilize the urban landscape to promote Peruvian Nationalism through the baptism of the streets and the construction of public monuments. Our focus is on the application of these measures and the reception of them by the residents and passersby, as they were confronted with the current reality of naming space and living in the city. Moreover, We will seek to define the lines of an urban project from the Peruvian elites for Lima, which would have its starting point in the construction of the Monument to Bolívar (1859) and its final point in Monument to Castilla (1915), the chronological limits of our work. During the second government of Augusto Leguía (1919-1930), the program succumbed to flag Patria Nueva, which wanted to rebuild nationalism on expanded bases, expressed by the inclusion of Prehispanic iconography in sculptural projects.
