Abstract

The present research aims to investigate a fundamental theme in the philosophy of Nietzsche, namely, the will of truth. When he deals with the question of truth, Nietzsche does it in an unusual way. He poses the question of truth also in the realm of morality, and asks himself the value of truth. This study attempts to clarify this sui generis way of addressing the issue. We propose a strategic cut in Nietzsche's work: the book Beyond Good and Evil the prefaces of 1886, since such prefaces occupy a privileged position regarding the whole of the philosopher's work. This clipping helps us to understand the intimate relationship Nietzsche establishes between the content of his philosophy and his life experience, as it occurs, according to Nietzsche, with all philosophy. It also contributes to the clarification of the will of truth's theme, as the question Nietzsche asks concerning the value of truth leads one to ask who is the one that evaluates. In this regard, we intend to investigate Nietzsche's own way to deal with the question of truth, not as has been traditionally done in the search of a more rigorous and well justified truth, but by asking for the value of truth, the reasons why philosophers have always sought the truth and instituted it as absolute value as well as unconditional goal.
