Abstract

This research proposal for a short-term internship at Stanford University in the United States is part of a broader research effort involving the author of this project and Prof. Paulo Blikstein. The researchers have been working on joint projects since 2011. In 2015, as a result of a FAPESP research grant, the researchers established a research agenda focused on student training for design and product development. Joint research has already produced results, such as a co-authored paper accepted for publication in the International Journal of Engineering Education (IJEE). This research project aims to analyze the possibilities of integrating the product development process in Introduction to Engineering courses in Brazil. In this context, a series of activities have been underway since January 2016. Preparatory activities conducted include a survey with more than 1800 respondents and the collection of qualitative and quantitative data from a pilot course prepared and delivered in the first half of 2016. This research proposal involves the refinement of the statistical analyses of the data collected, as well as the discussion of the results and the implications considering the state of the art. These activities, with high added value, can be favored if executed together with Prof. Paulo Blikstein and his team during the internship abroad. The expected results of this research proposal include the preparation of a brochure for wide publication and the preparation of a paper in coauthorship for journal submission.
