Abstract

Our aim is to perform an investigation of microscopic models for diluted nematic liquid crystals. Such models are formulated on a lattice whose sites can be occupied by anisometric elements which interact with each other so as to favor uniaxial or biaxial nematic ordering. Our interest is to evaluate the characteristics of the phase diagrams of the models as a function of the temperature and of the concentration of the elements. At first the student will investigate the thermodynamics of the models in a one-dimensional lattice, in which no phase transition can occur, in order to get acquainted with calculation techniques. Later he will procede to investigate the behavior of mean-field versions of the models. (AU)
