Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide and their traditional risk factors were identified in previous studies. Recently, it has been proposed that depressive symptoms and depression could be associated with atherosclerosis and CVD, mediated by inflammatory mechanisms. In addition, some alternative hematologic markers, such as the Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) and platelet volume, might indicate subclinical inflammatory activity, possibly associated with cardiovascular risk. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the relation between depressive symptoms and the hematologic markers RDW and platelet volume, in individuals submitted to a routine medical evaluation at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (AU)
