Abstract

Appositions have been subject of a large number of investigations and, even so, there is no agreement in the linguistic literature about this topic, especially concerning the coreference relation between the items involved and the syntactic relation between them. This project focuses on close appositions without a linking element ("O escritor Machado de Assis") and of-appositions ("A cidade de São Paulo"). These constructions, in the Functional Discourse Grammar theoretical frame (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), represent, in the Interpersonal Level, only one Subact of Ascription, and, in the Representational Level, one entity that is represented by two elements, with formal differences in the morphosyntactic encoding. The general aim of the project is to confirm or deny the hypothesis that the pragmatic and semantic behavior of this kind of apposition has reflections on their morphosyntactic behavior, in order to reach an appropriate and functionally classification of the two kinds of appositions in terms of morphosyntactic encoding and the establishment of headedness, in addition to identifying possible discursive functions that these appositions can have. To do so, the methodological procedures will consider not only pragmatic and semantic factors, but also the morphosyntactic organization of the constructions in order to gather a set of criteria to establish headedness, on the condition that the more criteria applies to an element, the more prototypical the head is (KEIZER, 2007).
