Abstract

The aim of this project is to study Einstein's theory of general relativity and then apply its methods to analyze the twin paradox in versions of varying degrees of complexity. In particular, the twin paradox will be revisited in the context of spacetimes with nontrivial topology and curvature. The study of this problem in backgrounds with different degrees of symmetry is especially suitable to illustrate key and subtle points of the theory of relativity and to provide the student with a strong background on the subject.
