Abstract

The study of the reproductive process in different organisms is an important tool of analysis of the population dynamics, and its knowledge allows to subsidize data for diverse biological areas. The physiological control of these reproductive processes in teleosts is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad axis, in which the gonadotrophin releasing hormone synthesized by hypothalamic neurons stimulates the synthesis and secretion of luteinizing (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) hormones in the pituitary gland . Gonadotropins stimulate the synthesis and secretion of gonadal steroids, which act on gonadal maturation. The Prejereba (Lobotes surinamensis) is a marine teleost that is distributed throughout the Atlantic Ocean, with recent records in the Mediterranean Sea and Asia, but despite its wide distribution, there are no data on the reproductive physiology of this species. The present work has as objective to study the reproductive physiology of L. surinamensis in the natural environment, gathering information that allow applied works in the production and conservation of this species. Adult males and females will be collected in the Bay of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro for a period of one year during all seasons. The plasma profile of the gonadal steroids, FSH and LH, as well as the gene expression of these gonadotropins, will be monitored, and the results will be correlated with those of the plasma concentration. Histological and histochemical analyzes of the gonads will be performed as a tool for morphological evaluation, which will be corroborated with the physiological data, during the reproductive cycle. The period and the reproductive strategy of this species will be characterized based on the mentioned morpho-physiological information, plus the analyzes of fecundity and oocyte diameter. It is hoped that the data found will aid in the study of the fishing dynamics and conservation of natural environments. (AU)
