Analysis of X. fastidiosa in olive plants in the producing regions of the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais: occurrence and genetic diversity

Abstract

Xylella fastidiosa (XF) is known for its ability to infect and cause disease in numerous plant species. The most recent host species of this bacterium is olive trees (Olea europea) with reports in southern Italy, where plants with leaf blight had the symptoms associated with infection by X. fastidiosa subsp. pauca (XFp). Reports of the presence of (XF) in olive trees were made in California (USA) and Argentina, but with a much milder incidence than what has been observed in Italy, where centennial plants have been severely affected, leading to their death. In southeastern Brazil (São Paulo and Minas Gerais) olive growing has been established in mountainous regions, where plants infected with X. fastidiosa subsp. pauca has also been reported, which symptoms are similar to those seen in Italy, but may be confused with others related to fungal diseases or even nutritional disorders. Little is known about XFp in olive trees in Brazil: 1. the strain of XFp found in olive trees in Brazil (ST16) is genetically different from that reported in Italy (ST53), Argentina (ST13) and California (XF, multiplex subsp.); 2. Plants with XFp were found in two locations in the Serra da Mantiqueira. Therefore, in order to clarify important points in this new pipeline, this research project has as objectives; I. To determine the spatial distribution of XF in the main olive producing regions of the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais; II. To verify the existence of genetically different strains in these regions and associated to the symptoms of olive leaf scalds; And III. Tracing the possible migratory routes of this infection.This request for personal support for research development at master's level is linked to the interinstitutional research project 'Xylella fastidiosa infecting Olive oil trees in Brazil: knowing the players (bacteria and the vectors) for the sustainable management' (proj, # 2016 / 02176-7) from which all the resources for carrying out the scientific activities proposed in this request for support will be provided.
