Abstract

Photobiomodulation (PBM), a technique that is being used for over 40 years, is based on applying light in order to modify cellular processes such as proliferation, tissue regeneration and analgesia. These effects are strong evidences that PBM can modulate the cell cycle and increase tissue oxygenation, which are determinant factors in a radiotherapy result. Therefore, in this project it is proposed the investigation of the combination of these techniques to the deleopment of a protocol that enhances tumor damage and treatment efficacy. In vitro experiments will enable the study of PBM in cell proliferation and cell cycle and its combination with radiotherapy, using the MTT assay and flow cytometry. From these experiments it will be determined the protocols to be analyzed in vivo. It will be used an oral cavity cancer model, using the human squamous cell carcinoma cells SCC-25, and in vivo tumor induction will be performed in hairless mice. The aim of this experiments is the evaluation of the techniques combination in a model of higher biological complexity and the analysis of tumor damage and animal survival in order to propose a protocol that enhances the cancer response to ionizing radiation.
