Abstract

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure detected after the 20th gestational week and other signs of organ damage such as proteinuria, low platelets counting and higher plasmatic concentrations of liver enzymes. It's a condition in which the endothelial nitric oxide synthesis is impaired and therefore vasodilation is not adequate, and oxidative stress is greater due to the pregnant metabolic state, leading to antioxidant genes activation such as Nrf2, a transcription factor that can induce antioxidant enzymes like heme-oxygenase 1 (HO-1). Asian populations such as Japanese and Korean ones are known to be longevous and healthy people regarding their cardiovascular rates, and those people have in common a high iodine daily intake mostly from seaweeds. This rates are not usually sustained when asian subjects immigrate to western countries and adapt to their life style, which includes a poor iodine intake. These studies suggest that diet habits play an important role in these peoples health parameters. Clinical evidences show that preeclamptic women have lower iodine urinary excretion with no significant differences in plasmatic thyroid hormones levels, which might be due to other extrathyroid effects of iodine. Thus, this study aims to assess a possible endothelial protective role of iodine when those cells are challenged with preeclamptic women's plasma, by the activation of antioxidant transcription factor Nrf2 and HO-1.
