Intelligence, real and esteemed performances and self-esteem: possible relationships

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate people's knowledge about their abilities (estimated performance), to verify the actual performance in tasks that evaluate these abilities and to compare them, as well as to verify the relations between self-esteem and both performances in the tasks. The sample will include 40 adolescents and young adults aged between 17 and 19 years of regular high school, enrolled in public schools in the interior of São Paulo. The following instruments will be used for data collection: Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Arithmetic and Information Subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III), Metacognitive Knowledge Assessment Technique and Performance Monitoring Assessment Technique in the subtests of the WAIS. There will be different procedures for the participants: half of them will first be applied the Metacognitive Knowledge Assessment Technique, then the WAIS subtests, the Performance Monitoring Evaluation Technique in the subtests and, finally, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. For the other half of the sample, the following procedure will be used: first, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale will be applied, then the Metacognitive Knowledge Assessment Technique, the WAIS subtests and the Performance Monitoring Evaluation Technique in the subtests.
