Abstract

This project strives to analyze the relationships between Irish chiefs and English magnates in 13th century Ireland making use of a methodology that has not been sufficiently explored by historians: agent-based modeling. Characterized by the nominal submission of Irish elites to the English crown, by the imperfect implementation of English institutions and by a history of wars, raids and other hostilities, the period known as the Lordship of Ireland (1171-1541) was for a long time described as the product of an "imperfect conquest". From the 1970s onward, authors such as Robin Frame challenged this paradigm, arguing that seemingly entropic social relationships could actually indicate a pragmatic, improvised and relatively successful modus operandi of governability. His remarks instigated a revision of the dichotomy between "order" and "disorder" and inspired a broader reevaluation of the applicability of contemporary standards of political stability to the medieval world. Agent-based modeling is a computational research method focused on the relationships of autonomous agents between themselves and their environment. Popularized in the field of complex systems analysis, the methodology gained a following among economists due to its capacity to bridge the gap between the actions of independent actors and the systemic patterns they may integrate. Based on the documents issued by the English administration and narrative and annalistic Irish sources, I intend to use this method to contribute to the discussion about the bonds of cooperation and hostility between the English and the Irish.
