Abstract

Contamination of water resources is one of the main current environmental problems, and the concentration of micropollutants - substances that appear in concentrations in the order of ¼g L-1 and ng L-1 - has increased significantly in recent years Among substances that can be classified as micropollutants Are compounds having estrogenic activity such as bisphenol A (BPA). Endocrine disruptors with estrogenic activity are those that most concern health professionals, as they are extremely biologically active and have a solid introduction into the environment. Removal of emerging pollutants through stabilization ponds - the leading sewage treatment technology in Brazil - shows variation in efficiency. Other processes for the removal of pollutants are reverse osmosis, chemical oxidation, ozonolysis. The procedures are expensive, and the products of these reactions are not known for sure. These processes require many modifications in the existing processing lines and, therefore, great financial investment, fact that leads to its impossibility of installation. SMR (sub-micron sized resin particles) technology is not effective for the treatment of the wide range of compounds classified as micropollutants; this system removes the emerging contaminant from the effluent but does not treat it as a further treatment step for the elimination of same. Oxidation of pollutants by enzymes derived from micro-organisms is considered a potentially effective technology for the removal of these substances in waste water that will eventually be discharged into the environment. In our laboratory we are studying the degradation of compounds with estrogenic action by fungi of the genera Trametes and Pleurotus. In this work, the removal of BPA by the Trametes versicolor fungus, whose enzymatic activity has a known technological interest, will be evaluated by applying 100uL of a solution of the compound to a treatment system and performing the degradation analysis on an Agilent Infinity Series 1220 HPLC, Coupled to the DAD detector. The enzymatic activities of Manganese Peroxidase and Lacase will also be studied. (AU)
