Abstract

In the last decades, wireless communications systems have been experiencing a great development, becoming more and more indispensable and ubiquitous in our daily life. In this context, the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) emerges as the key enabler to achieve the growing demands of future wireless applications, including ultra-high data rates, ubiquitous coverage, a massive number of connected devices, and extremely low latencies. Together with this growth of communication networks, a huge amount of confidential information will be transmitted via wireless channels. Thus, providing an effective security service is a major priority in the design and implementation of 5G network. In this sense, the traditional approach for providing security to data transmitted over a communication network by using cryptographic techniques is no longer sufficient for the new requirements. To circumvent this deficiency, physical-layer security has been recognized as a solution that offers great benefits for the protection of information by taking advantage of the characteristics of wireless channels. On the other hand, cooperative communications have emerged as a promising alternative to combat the deleterious effects of fading on the mobile radio channel, bringing significant gains in terms of capacity and coverage of wireless networks. In this perspective, the present project aims to analyze the advantages of cooperative communication in terms of the physical layer security, for different scenarios, by considering multiple relays.
