Abstract

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an advance multicarrier modulation format that has been adopted in a broad variety of telecommunication networks. Not only consolidated standards such as WiFi or ADSL use this modulation format but also future implementations are expected to rely on this high-spectral density and flexible modulation format. The main advantage of OFDM is its capacity to compensate the channel frequency selectivity, achieving spectral efficiencies that are difficult to reach using single carrier modulation. To take advantage of the flexibility that OFDM offers, however, multiple parameters must be controlled, which requires a flexible implementation of an OFDM modem. This is especially important in our research group since we expect to use OFDM signals in different experimental and simulation scenarios, from radio over fiber with few Gbps capacity to long-haul communications transmitting at 100 Gbps and above. With that in mind, the student will develop a flexible OFDM modem code that could be used to generate off-line signals to load on an arbitrary waveform generator or to be used in simulations, either stand-alone or in conbination with third-party simulators. Alongside with the modem code, the project will include a graphical user interface, as well as a complete documentation that will facilitate its use not only within our group but also for the general public.
