Abstract

Rabies is a viral zoonosis of wide global distribution and great importance in public health, characterized by an acute encephalitis which is generally fatal. In recent decades, Brazil has reduced significantly the number of human rabies cases transmitted by dogs, based on the decentralization of surveillance actions and rabies control in the states and municipalities. On the other hand, wild rabies assumed more importance mainly due to the synanthropic habits of these animals. The precise knowledge of the spatio-temporal distribution of rabies cases in Brazil, in humans and animals, will contribute to the development of measures for prevention, surveillance and control of the disease. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the available data of rabies, considering the epidemiological situation, aiming to program strategies that allow limiting the rabies diffusion among animals, avoiding the occurrence of human cases. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the evolution of human rabies cases confirmed by laboratory diagnosis at Instituto Pasteur de São Paulo, Brazil, from 2003 to 2016, in order to improve the understanding of the elements involved, thus helping to enrich the strategies of rabies control and prevention. In order to obtain the information, the files for requesting exams and data registered in the computerized system of the Pasteur Institute, Inforaiva, will be evaluated, considering the epidemiological profile of the aggressions and transmissions, clinical aspects and the laboratory tests used in the diagnosis. Data will be analyzed in a descriptive way, using the resources of the Microsoft Office Excell 2007 program, in order to evaluate the frequency of occurrence of the different variables proposed, expressed as a percentage.
