Abstract

Foliar diseases and pests in coconut are major causes of death of coconut palms and can spread quickly, leading to losses for producer. Thus, diseases and foliar pests are a concern for producers and a challenge for researchers who seek to develop efficient methods for controlling them. The application of pesticides is a common practice employed for the control of these diseases. Spraying is a conventional method of treatment whereby pesticides are nebulized. However, this method is impractical on large trees and can have negative environmental impacts on non-target organisms. Endotherapy, which relies on the application of products directly into the stem and translocation system, has been a promising method. However, there is need for development an endotherapic prototype for the application of pesticides in the coconut palm stem due the difficulties found with commercially available equipment, such as, stem with thinness, dense fibers and heterogeneity. In addition, develop and validate an analytical method for the determination of pesticide residues in coconut leaves to confirm the translocation. Also, as a security measure, to analyze the pesticide residues in fruit from treated plants. So, this project proposes to development an innovate equipment to carry out endotherapic application of pesticides for control foliar diseases and pests in coconut. (AU)
