Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a prevalent disease in the elderly and is associated with vascular impairment and physical-functional limitations, which can be attenuated or enhanced by glycemic control. Objective: To investigate whether glycemic control influences arterial stiffness and functional performance in elderly patients with T2DM. Method: Will be included volunteers with diagnosis of DM2, of both sexes, with more than 60 years. They will be divided into two groups, according to glycated hemoglobin levels: HbA1C <7% (satisfactory glycemic control) and HbA1C and 7% (unsatisfactory glycemic control). Both groups will be submitted to the following evaluations: 1) Arterial rigidity, by analysis of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (OPV-cf); and by amplification index (AIx) 2) Functional performance, evaluated by sit-and-lift test of 30 seconds, and 10-meter walking speed test. The intergroup comparison will be performed by unpaired and Mann-Whitney t tests. Associations will be established by the Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient. In all analyzes, the result will be significant when p <5%. Expected results: Based on the obtained results, we expect to confirm the following hypotheses: a) elderly patients with T2DM and unsatisfactory glycemic control present higher arterial stiffness and worse functional performance when compared to those with good glycemic control; b) there is a positive association between arterial stiffness and functional performance in elderly patients with T2DM. Contributions: It is intended to elucidate the influence of glycemic control as a contributing factor for the development of vascular alterations and functional deficits in elderly with T2DM. In this way, it will be possible to propose specific prevention. (AU)
