Abstract

The research project to be conducted in this master's program will perform a close reading of two of Gilberto Freyre's most notable works: Casa-grande & Senzala and Sobrados e Mucambos. It aims to describe aspects of his style hitherto unexplored in depth in the most accomplished critical readings of the author. It will describe in detail such matters as: syntax, the balance between colloquialisms and academic language in his prose, linguistic strategies used to effect certain generalizations, figurative language - along with other literary features which characterize his descriptions - and his closest ties with other literary authors. A more detailed description, therefore, of a language at once complimented for its modernity and literary values and criticized for its manipulative character, should fill a gap in the heated debate over the language of an extremely influential Brazilian writer.
