Abstract

In this project the student will study groups from the point of view of computer science. The first goal will be to read the paper by Holt, Rees, Röver and Thomas on co-context-free groups. These groups form the currently studied step of the Chomsky hierarchy of groups with respect toautomata and which previously classified all finite groups and all virtually free groups. We will then study Lehnert and Schweitzer's paper which shows that Thompson's group V is a co-context-free group and why this is important. (AU)
