Abstract The lot-sizing problem, which arises in the context of the production planning, is an optimization problem that consists in determining the quantity of product to be produced in each period along a finite time horizon, in order to meet some demand and optimizing an objective function, such as to minimize costs and delays. This research project will address the lot-sizing problem with a single and multiple plants. Each plant has its own production and demand for all sorts of items. The aim is to find a production plan that satisfies the demands of every client, minimizing the sum of the production, inventory, transport and setup costs. A mathematical model proposed in the literature will be studied and a solution method will be implemented and tested using an optimization package. The objective is that the student learns about important concepts of mathematical optimization and obtains skills for mathematical/computational tools development, preparing him for future researches in the area.
