DFT study of a quantum dot side-coupled to a quantum wire

Abstract

We will study electrical conduction through an elementary nanostructured device: a quantum dot side-coupled to a quantum wire. In our model, the dot charge interacts with the charge in the Wannier orbital of the wire closest to the dot. We will rely on Density-Functional Theory (DFT) to diagonalize the model Hamiltonian and to compute the electronic density at the Wannier site. From that, we will obtain the device's conductance as a function of the gate potential applied to the quantum dot to control its occupation. Results will be compared with (I) experimental data and (II) published theoretical results of NRG studies of the device. (AU)
