Abstract

Panicum maximum is the most productive tropical forage at the national level and is responsible for a large part of beef cattle fattening in Brazil and in several Latin American countries. In spite of the great economic importance, researches related to the genetic of specie are scarce, mainly because of high complexity of the genome and ploidy level (4n), besides the low investment for the research in forage grasses. In this context, the project aims to contribute to the genetic and molecular knowledge of P. maximum, by increasing the resolution of a genetic linkage map constructed previously using a base population of high importance for the breeding program of specie. Therefore, the SNPs markers (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) will be detected from the Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS), that allows the genotyping of thousands of markers quickly and with low cost , and will be inserted in the previous map. The results obtained will contribute to a better molecular genetic knowledge of P. maximum and will be the basis for other studies of the species and other forage grasses. From these results, it will be possible identify genes and molecular markers related to characteristics of important agronomic/economical that in the long term, may support the Marker Assisted Selection (SAM) in breeding programs of this forage grass.
