Abstract

This research is inserted in the Computational Design field through the optimization of the performance driven architectural design. The use of optimization methods in architecture allows more efficient responses to complex demands, helping in the interrelationship and balancing of the several factors involved in the design. However, each optimization method has its own limitations and potential, and despite the progressive increase of research and design in architecture using optimization from Computational Design, there is little reflection in the area about which methods are more or less appropriate for certain kinds of problems (Macheiras et al., 2013, WORTMANN et al., 2015, SHI et al., 2016). From this context, the present proposal has the general objective to explore, evaluate and establish guidelines for the implementation of optimization methods in the process of performance-driven architectural design. To achieve this goal the candidate will use a study case of a performance-oriented design process and an experiment of comparison between optimization methods applied to the design process in architecture. The candidate intends to work under the supervision of Professor António Leitão of Instituto Superior Técnico in University of Lisbon (IST-ULISBOA), professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georegions (DECivil) and the Institute of Systems Engineering and Computers - Research and Development (INESC-ID). The professor also coordinates the ADA (Algorithmic Design for Architecture) research group, reference of scientific production in the area of the present proposal. (AU)
