Abstract

The average yield of the soybean crop in Brazil has increased considerably in the last 50 years, however it is widely unknown what are the morphophysiological attributes that contributed to this increase. It is intended with this research, to better understand how the genetic improvement for soybean yield modified aspects of plant physiology. Moreover, from the industrial revolution to the present day, the carbon dioxide content in the environment has increased and continues to increase. The evaluation of old and modern Brazilian soybean cultivars in higher carbon dioxide permits to discover the effects of atmospheric change on crop cultivation and yield, and also to characterize the Brazilian cultivars in this aspect. To achieve this goal, a field experiment with thirteen soybean cultivars at the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment is proposed, where experimental plots will be exposed to ambient and elevated [CO2] concentrations (400 and 600 ppm). Will be evaluated attributes related to photosynthesis, as leaf water vapor exchange, leaf CO2 exchange, leaf area, leaf N and plant biomass. The focus of this project is on aspects of energy conversion related to photosynthesis in historical Brazilian cultivars. Understanding the physiological basis of yield improvement of modern cultivars over the old ones can help in evaluating strategic goals to increase yield in the future. (AU)
