Abstract

This research project proposes the analysis of re-signification of the painting O Combate Naval do Riachuelo (2ª versão) (1883 - Museu Nacional de Belas Artes), by the painter Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832-1903), at the salon caricature from Revista Illustrada (1876-1898). For this, the study is directed to the lithograph of the painting published on edition 363, in the year 1883, of the periodical directed by Angelo Agostini (1843-1910). The objective is to understand the meaning that image assumes inside the magazine, both in the context of art criticism and in relation to the political content expressed throughout its editions. The research will be constituted, therefore, by the study of selected editions of the periodical in comparison with the bibliography, that is divided in three scopes: about the Revista Illustrada and the figure of Agostini; related to the nineteenth-century art and historical painting; and, finally, of periodical press and art criticism in the nineteenth-century.
