Abstract

This research will aim to comprehend the relation between the works of Italian artist Virgilio Guidi, contained in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, and the notion of the Italian Novecento as defined by art critic Margherita Sarfatti. The works are: "Painters in the open air" (Pittori all'Aperto), 1919 and "Navy" (Laguna), 1946 (?).This research project is linked to the larger project of investigation of the collection of Italian modern art within MAC - USP, conducted by professor Ana Gonçalves Magalhães, responsible for guiding this scientific work. The monographic work related to the paintings of other artists present within the collection mentioned previously, has been made by other researchers of the group conducted by professor Ana, with the goal of re-evaluate the definition of Italian modern art, as projected by the collection of paintings. Furthermore, in the case of Virgilio Guidi, we are referring ourselves to a painter who had a relevant part in its country of origin between de 1920s and 1930s, nevertheless whose work is still very little studied.
