Abstract

This project focuses on the study and edition of the book Motetti, Madrigali et Canzone Francese Di diversi Eccellenti Autori à Quatro Cinque, & Sei Voci by Giovanni Bassano, 1591, showing the possibilities of performance and the diminution method proposed by the author. The original edition of the book was lost during World War II and only a manuscript copy of 1890, made by the German musicologist Friedrich Chrysander, is known. The work is the second book published by G. Bassano and one of the books with the greatest number of diminutions of that time, in which are presented about fifty diminutions on one or two voices of pieces to four, five and six voices, mostly motets of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and madrigals of Cipriano de Rore. Giovanni Bassano was a singer, composer and cornetist, member of a famous family of instrument makers, composers and instrumentalists established in London and Venice, he had as his tutor Girolamo Dalla Casa, to whom he succeeded as director of instrumental music in the Basilica of San Marcos.
