Abstract

To evaluate the overall motor development, reaching performance and manual exploratory skills of infants at biological and (premature birth) environmental risk (socioeconomic) and to compare them with infants who are not at risk. Methods: This is a cross-sectional comparative study, composed by convenience sample. Infants with biological and environmental risk, and without risk will be evaluated, and will be evaluated at 6 months of age and divided in three groups. Motor development will be evaluated trough the Albert Infant Motor Scale (AIMS), reaching performance will be assessed trough kinematic analysis using Qualisys®, considering the following variables: straightness index, deceleration index, movement unit, average velocity and peak velocity. Manual exploratory skills pre-determined for this study will be: fingering, mouthing, waving, and banging on the object, banging the object, transferring, rotating and alternating. To the assessment of reaching and manual exploratory skills, infants will be placed in a baby chair reclined at 45º. The reaching and manual exploratory skills will be stimulated by an attractive malleable and rigid object. Expected results: It is expected to find out a lower motor development, differences in kinematic variables of reaching and lower frequency in manual exploratory skills in infants with biological and environmental risk compared to infants without risk.
