Abstract

Further advancing my doctoral research "The Possible Nation: romanticism in Brazil and Argentina" this project proposes a reevaluation of Brazil's Romantic Movement through comparative studies. Though Brazilian romanticism has been read vis-à-vis the Second Empire's nationalism and interest for creating national myths, it was a movement aware of international literary trends, as the Participation of the Nitheroy generation in Parisian institute of history and geography, as well as Norberto de Sousa Silva's correspondence with his Argentinean peers attest. With that in mind, I propose to discuss Brazilian romanticism in light of recent debates on "world literature," that is on the formation of an international literary community (Franco Moretti, Pascale Casanova, David Damrosch etc.); as well as in the light of the Brazilian critical tradition that has historically discussed the place of Brazilian literature in the western literary system (Antonio Candido, Roberto Schwarz, and others). Exploring this debates vis-à-vis Brazilian romanticism I believe one can better inquire into how the place of enunciation of different literary critics shape their approaches and findings.
