Abstract

Mangroves are considered to be one of the most important coastal wetlands on the planet, as they provide various ecosystem services to human populations, such as breeding, protection and feeding areas for various fish species that are targets of recreational fishing. These ecosystem services and natural resources have no monetary value. Therefore, it is essential to apply environmental valuation techniques. The objective of this proposal is to evaluate the Cananeia mangroves from the perspective of recreational fishermen. In order to do so, the Travel Cost Method will be applied, since it considers the value of use of the environment in such a way that its result is influenced by the variable frequency of visitation and the costs that the tourist has to practice the activities in these areas. The results of the current study will help to understand the income that the mangrove ecosystem generates economically for the municipality, besides the cost to use it and to practice the fishing activity. In addition, the results of the current study could be used to raise public awareness about the importance of mangrove conservation and even provide economic data for the municipality studied, helping local public policies.
