Impact of social jet lag on cognition, mood e quality of life

Abstract

Currently, the social demands imposed by work, school and academic activities prevent youth and adults from maintaining an ideal sleep routine. Traditionally, these requirements are more in line with the sleep time of individuals with the morning chronotype, while the evening chronotype usually experiences significant differences between sleep time on days of the week and the weekend. This situation causes a restriction of sleep, reducing sleeping hours per night and leading to numerous health damages already described in the literature. This phenomenon has been conceptualized as social JetLag (SJL). Considering the physiological impact already observed in other studies, this current research aims to analyze the associations between SJL, mood, cognitive domains, chronotype, quality of life and cortisol secretion in adults with conventional work / study routine. 70 volunteers of both sex and aged 18-55 years will be recruited, and in a transversal study, two experimental groups will be formed, being a) Group with SJL and b) Control Group. The subjects will then be submitted to a neuropsychological assessment, mood and quality of life questionnaires, as well as a salivary cortisol analysis. We test the hypothesis of cognitive impairment, mood, quality of life and cortisol secretion alterations involved in SJL. (AU)
