Abstract

The mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (GL) has been widely used in Eastern countries since ancient times as a suplementary in the longevity and treatment of human diseases, among them cancer. The GL extracts have different aims in tumor lines acting in different ways due to specific components such as, polysaccharides, acting mainly on inflammatory and antitumor responses. Among the various tumor types, head and neck carcinoma is considered a major public health problem. It is widely studied because presents high rates of recurrence and metastases, with tumor stem cells being the main responsible for these mechanisms. With high rates of self-renewal and proliferation, being able to generate new tumors, tumor stem cells are being considered responsible for failure in conventional treatments as radioactive and chemotherapeutic schedule. Thus, since the polysaccharides of GL have proven antitumor actions, and head and neck carcinomas present considerable failure rates in their treatment, it is proposed to evaluate the cytotoxic and cytostatic capacity of the mushroom polysaccharides on exchange cells of tongue squamous cell carcinome.
