Abstract

Temperature and UV radiation are important factors that regulate bloom forming cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins production and carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in aquatic ecosystems. Due to changing global climatic conditions, investigations of physiological during the production of microcystins and sequestration of CO2 are urgently needed. The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate the combined effects of increasing temperatures and UV radiation on changes in the CO2 sequestration during microcystins production and oxidative response of Microcystis strains. Experiments will be performed under controlled conditions, simulating climate change scenarios of high temperatures and UV radiation, while monitoring the CO2 sequestration during microcystins production at daily experiments. Samples will be collected at daily intervals during 8 and 6 days. The results from this study will contribute to unravelling some processes response to climate change conditions in microcystin-producing cyanobacteria.
