Abstract

The aim of this case-control study is to determine the possible association of dental fractures to the extension of amalgam restoration. As secondary objective, factors that may be directly related to the fracture (extension of fractured tooth wall, parafunction habits, wear facets, and the presence of lining material) will be evaluated. Patients with amalgam restorations and dental fracture will be selected. In addition, for the control group, teeth with amalgam restorations without fracture will be selected according to parameters, as gender, age, and tooth group, detected in the control group. For the case group, composed by fractured teeth, the dental remnant will be measured. In both groups, the mesio-distal and buccal-lingual extensions of amalgam restoration, the fractured cusp, the presence of fracture lines and occlusal wear facets will be assessed. All teeth will be radiographed to evaluate pulp involvement, molded and photographed for visual analysis of cavity/restoration. The fractures/restorations will be evaluated by two calibrated examiners. The data will be evaluated by Chi-square test (5%) and Odds.
