Abstract This project aims to discuss Roland Barthes's use of figures of speech, as related to food and commensality. The analysis references texts where he refers directly to food (as in the seminair How to Live Together: Novelistic Simulations of Some Everyday Spaces and the preface of Physiology of Taste, from Brillat-Savarin), as well as his essays, in which he uses many food-related metaphors in his method, such as S/Z and "Qu'est-ce que la critique?". Conceptually, we will treat his literature as an invitation to "eat together"; for this reason, it will be necessary to reference texts related to reception theory, especially those by Luiz Costa Lima and Umberto Eco.
