Abstract

We will study the movement of a falling parachutist under the action of gravity and the air drag force, in one and two dimensions. One of the critical points of this modeling is when the parachute is opened, which can not be too fast in order to not hurt the parachutist with the rapid deceleration. We will study some possible transitions of the drag coefficient in this situation. Another possible critical point is the modeling of the drag force which can be affected by the so-called 'drag crisis'. We will do an analytical study of some possible models and compare the result with actual skydiving data. (AU)
