Abstract

Marine fish is highly dependent of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The main source used to supply this requirement in marine species normally comes from fish by-products like fish oil. The reliance on fish oil could be considered a limiting factor to the industry expansion in Brazil since the cost of this ingredient is extremely high, the production is unstable and the nutritional quality is highly variable. Several studies performed with commercial fish species showed feasibility in the replacement of fish oil by alternative ingredients such as vegetable oils and terrestrial animal fats, without an impact in the growth. However, the lipid metabolism and mainly the muscle fatty acid composition are negatively impacted due to the marked reduction of DHA and EPA levels. Some multinational companies are investing to develop ingredients with high concentration of these important fatty acids, normally using oils and meal produced from marine algae species. However, the production cost of these ingredients could be considered high, making it impossible to fully replace fish oil. Before the investment in such alternative ingredients it is essential to know more about the basic physiology of the target species to produce specific and low-cost diets. Thus, this proposal aims to test specific diets for marine fish species, especially California Yellowtail, using low-cost and highly produced lipids sources, supplemented with DHA and EPA rich products from marine algae species. The alternative lipid ingredients that will be tested in this project are highly produced not only in Mexico but also in Brazil, so the techniques, processes and results can be directly applied to the national aquaculture sector.
